Home Maintenance Checklist: 15 Things To Do For Spring

1. CHECK YOUR RAIN GUTTERS
Making sure your gutters are clear of leaves and debris will help any rainwater drain as it should.
2. CHECK YOUR SHINGLES
Spring is a good time to check your shingles to make sure they are still intact and none have blown off during the winter months.
3. INSPECT THE ATTIC
Even if the roof may look good, you'll want to check inside the attic for any signs of leaks. One other thing to check for is signs of any unwanted animals that may have made it in during Winter.
4. SCAN THE BASEMENT FOR LEAKS
Head downstairs to see if there are any signs of leaks in the basement. Windows are usually a problem area for leaks. You'll also want to look for any cracks where water may be able to come in.
5. SERVICE YOUR AC AND FURNACE
Spring is a season of varying temperatures. It is a good idea to ensure both your AC and furnace are in good working condition by getting service on them. This is a good time to replace your furnace filter. Checking your dryer vent is also a good idea to ensure there is no buildup of lint.
Also, take a quick gander at your drier vent as well, making sure to keep it clear.
6. ADJUST YOUR THERMOSTAT
With those varying temperatures, you'll need to adjust your thermostat to get an early start on managing energy costs.
7. CHECK SMOKE ALARMS AND FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
Use this time to ensure your smoke detectors have new batteries and are working properly. Be sure to check that your fire extinguishers have not expired. Being prepared for the worst can pay off.
8. RUN THE SPRINKLERS
Give your sprinklers a test run. Keep an eye out for any leaks or damaged sprinkler heads. Make sure the sprinklers are watering your grass and not porches or sidewalks.
9. INSPECT WINDOWS AND DOORS
Fix or replace the screens on windows and doors to keep bugs from entering your home. This is also a good time to wash your windows. You'll want to clean the tracts and seals with a vacuum attachment before you start washing the panes.
10. GET AHEAD OF DECK MAINTENANCE
If your home has a deck, it has been subject to the elements during the Winter months. Be sure to look it over to ensure it is secure at the posts and base. It is a good idea to power wash it at the same time and make any necessary repairs or repainting.
11. CHECK EXTERIOR LIGHTS
Spring is a good time to check exterior lights and replace any bulbs that are out or dim. This also applies to any shed lights or pathway lights.
12. CHECK YOUR EXTERIOR FAUCET
Hopefully, you remembered to disconnect any hoses and drain your exterior faucets before winter hit. Now it is time to restore the water to that faucet and take a moment to let it run for a bit while you check for signs of cracks in the pipe.
13. DIVE INTO SPRING CLEANING
Items tend to accumulate over the cold months and some cleaning is pushed to the side. Now that it is warmer, it is a great time to do spring cleaning. Items such as cleaning baseboards, decluttering pantries and closets, giving away clothes, and tossing any unneeded items are all great ways to kick off the spring cleaning. Aside from the mental health benefits of having a tidier home, it’s also a method to keep allergens at a minimum.
14. GET READY FOR GARDENING!
Gardening can be good for the soul and a great way to destress. Cleaning up all of those dead branches or bushes helps the plants around your yard get a fresh start!
15. GET OUT YOUR OUTDOOR FURNITURE AND BBQ
Once the yard is up to par, you’ll want to start hosting family and friends. It's time to pull out your patio furniture and get it cleaned. You'll also want to pull out the BBQ to get it cleaned, propane filled, and have it ready to grill up some summertime dinners!
